Customers like the noise level of the water purification unit. They say it is extremely quiet and powerful. Some customers also mention that it is submerged in the tank and cannot be heard at all.

Customers like the filtration of the water purification unit. They mention that the filter itself is fantastic, the resulting filtration is great, and the filter action is great. Some mention that it is a very good underwater filter and that it has excellent filtration options. Overall, customers are happy with the filter and recommend it to others.

"...Excellent water filtration, great options for filter media, nice to have 3 options of water flow..." Read more
Customers are mixed about the power of the water purification unit. Some mention that it works well, while others say that it only works intermittently and stops completely. The motor would sometimes quit for no apparent reason and wouldn't restart.

Customers are mixed about the cleanability of the water purification unit. Some mention that it does an amazing job keeping the tank clean and clear, while others say that it releases an crazy amount of debris back into the tank. The filter takes up more room inside and is more of a hassel to clean than hob filters. It does need regular cleaning, but this is unsurprising in the water treatment industry.

Customers are mixed about the quality of the water purification unit. Some mention that the pump is sufficiently strong, while others say that it breaks easily and is unreliable. The filter body is made of very sturdy plastic. However, some customers report that the unit stopped working completely after 6 weeks.

Customers are mixed about the value of the water purification unit. Some mention it's worth the purchase, reasonable priced for good quality, and a good filter for the price. However, others say that it seems a bit pricey, too costly to maintain, and the use of carbon increases the filter cost.

Customers are mixed about the flow of the water. Some mention that it's really good, surprisingly strong, and impressed by the water circulation. However, others say that it is not able to keep water flowing throughout the tank, and that it reduces flow within a few days.

The sponge covers all inlets, so my Kuhli Loaches and shrimp aren't at risk of being sucked in, which is extremely nice. Any other filter or pump I've used required me to superglue sponges or screens to the inlets. I also love that the sponge is easily removeable via the lid, so I can pull it out and clean it without moving the filter. It also has a removeable piece in the center that I removed and replaced with a media bag full of Zeolite and Carbon blend with some compressed peat for acidity.
Mounting the filter was the only downside I had with it, but because of the easily removeable sponge I'm not knocking off a star for it. The U2 and higher models have a bracket, the U1 just has 3 easily removeable suction cups (not a good thing) so once you stick it on the glass, if you even try to move it the tiniest bit to position it just right the suction cups disconnect from the unit and stay stuck on the glass, forcing you to pry them off, pull out the filter, reattach the suction cups, then reposition it again. That said, it stays put, its fairly small, and looks nice.
For a filter that attaches to nothing but the wall, it's very quiet. Much more so than the two cheaper units I used. Obviously a HOB will be quieter since it isn't attached to the entire tank turning your tank into a giant vibrating subwoofer, but for something that DOES transmit all of its vibrations straight into the tank its very quiet. My Marina HOB is quieter and the U1 does make a very faint grinding noise, but I can only hear it right next to the tank and 5 feet away it is inaudible.
Filtration is great as well. I use it as a second filter, since my HOB is stuffed full of loads of different media so the flow rate is lower, so this serves primarily as a bio-filter to reduce ammonia. For that purpose it does fantastic, and the small media bag in the middle for some extra filtration is nice too. The flow is the best part here though, it keeps my substrate crystal clean and any gunk that gets kicked up by the loaches or cories immediately gets swept into the current and sucked up by the filters. If you're using this as your only filter, definitely add some zeolite and carbon to the middle of it.
All said, it's a fantastic filter and I honestly wish I just had one U2 for my 20gal rather than two separate filters.
The U3 met all of these and at just 6 watts, runs for about 6 hours on a 20000mAh battery. I leave it out in the pond and just run it when I begin to see debris particles floating in the water, which ends up being about 1-2 times per week. I don’t put any chemicals in the pond and have avoided algae blooms. Phosphates, ammonia, nitrates, and pH have remained good, according to weekly tests. The only surprise, compared to another brand of filter I tried, is that the U3 is buoyant enough that I have to put rocks on it to get it to sink to the bottom of the pond since the ground obviously isn’t glass like an aquarium, and it doesn’t stay suctioned to the bottom.
Although the minnows can survive in very low oxygen environments, because the weather is hot and the pond is so small, I do run a separate USB air stone for them that lasts up to 48 hours on a battery pack. The combo of this and the U3 have kept the pond naturally pretty and habitable for small fish. The only downside is that the Fluval does suck up pieces of mosquito dunks as they dissolve... not sure if they still work if they're stuck inside the filter somewhere.
I can’t speak to how it works in a normal aquarium setting, but it's a convenient way to keep a small pond looking nice and doesn't necessarily require an electrical outlet if you don’t want to run it constantly (I suppose I could run it as much as 6hrs every day if I brought the battery in to charge as soon as it was depleted).
6 month update: This little filter is a beast. I’ve bee using it clear the gunk that’d built up in the pond all winter, and it handles sediment, decaying worms, and algae without complaint. I’ve temporarily put activated charcoal in the center compartment instead of the ceramic pellets to try to deal with the water discoloration.
Extremely quiet, i almost forget its running unless i look in the tank and see the water movement from it. Doesnt take up excess room outside.
Some have stated trouble starting but i havent had that issue.
Cons
Takes up more room inside.
More of a hassel to clean than hob filters like the aquaclear.
When you re pulling it out all the dirty excess water flows back into the tank.
No room for carbon like chemipure
Its a solid 4, I am torn if i will keep or go back to the aquaclear. Its nice not worrying about some mishap and water flowing into the house from the filter but a pain to clean.
Top reviews from other countries
Filtert einfach sehr gut. Reinigung einfach, neue Filtermedien nicht zu teuer.
5 Sterne für dieses taugliche Gerät.
Can’t hear it inoperation. Water is so much clearer within an hour of operation.
